Special winter menu at Shigetsu, the Zen Vegetarian Restaurant

Daily, from 11:00 to 14:00. Reservations required

Setsubun-e (lunar year-end) celebration at Tenryu-ji

Time: 8:00 to 16:30, February 3rd, 2018
Admission: ¥2,500
Visitors receive fukuzasa (branches of bamboo festooned with lucky charms) and ema (small wooden plaques on which to write wishes), together with mame-maki soybeans and a no-miss ticket for the fukubiki raffle. In addition, they may attend one of the three Daifukumame gift-scattering events (held at 11:30, 13:30, and 15:30).
The Setsubun events also include a tea ceremony, hosted by the Urasenke Tankokai Federation, and an exhibition of calligraphy by the pupils of Saga, Arashiyama, and Hirosawa Elementary Schools and Saga Middle School.
Free amazake drinks are available.

Hatto: Special spring exhibition of Matazo Kayama's Cloud Dragon painting

March 3th to May 20th, 2018
Daily, from 9:00 to 16:00 (March 7-21); 9:00 to 17:00 (March 21-May 10th)

Gyoten Koza (Dawn Zazen and Lecture)

July 28th (Saturday) and July 29th (Sunday)
Zazen, 6:00-7:00; Zen lecture by Tenryu-ji's Chief Abbot, 7:00-8:00. It is also possible to attend just the lecture.
The Gyoten Koza is held in the Daihojo. Admission is free. Please arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early. Following the lecture free somen noodles are served, which you may enjoy while looking at the Sogen Pond Garden.

Hatto: Special autumn exhibition of Matazo Kayama's Cloud Dragon painting

Sogen Pond Garden: Special early morning opening

From November 10th to December 2th, 2018, the Sogen Pond Garden opens at 7:30, thirty minutes earlier than usual, so that visitors may enjoy the special beauty of the garden's autumn colors in the early morning sunlight.

Joya no Kane (Midnight bell-tolling ceremony on New Year's Eve)

Welcome the New Year by ringing Tenryu-ji's temple bell on New Year's Eve. The ceremony begins at 23:45; ringing the bell is limited to the first 108 people (or small family-sized groups of people) who line up. Number cards will be handed out from 23:40. Please note that it is not possible to park cars at Tenryu-ji in the evening.
